Exhibition Report from Germany

Here are some photos from the opening reception of my big show in my home town in Germany. It was an incredible and unforgettable night.

People from all periods of my life in Germany came- teachers and students from various schools and colleges, people I played in bands with, made comic mags with, doctors and dentists... And many people who helped me to get to where I am. We had a full house and it was an honor see all these familiar faces, and many others, who came to support me and showed an interest in my illustrated NY adventures.

There was also a radio interview with the SWR, and a very kind review by the local newspaper Schwaebische Zeitung.

Thank you to everyone who came, and to the curator Martin Oswald, and all other organizers, the Mayor and the city of Weingarten.

The show is still up till June 12th 2016, open on Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends, at the Kornhausgalerie in Weingarten.

Thanks to Bernhard Goegler for some of these photos. Here are some more on my Facebook page:

Pencil Factory Exhibition in London

The fine folks of Durch Uncle, an illustration agency with offices in London, New York and Tokyo, curated an exhibition of past and present members of The Pencil Factory studios, at the Pan Macmillan Artspace.

The photos of the space and show look amazing and I'm very glad to be part of it with so many talented individuals. Above is a photo of the image I submitted.

You can see most of the framed pieces on their website, and they also prepared a neat press release. Thanks again to Dutch Uncle and Leandro Castelao of making the contact!

The Art Of Paul Hoppe Opening Reception

Last week was the great opening reception of my big 10 year retrospective at the German Consulate General in New York.

With Dr. Jakob von Wagner, Chief of Cultural Affairs at the Consulate General
I was honored to be able to exhibit my work at such a prestigious space and thrilled that so many people came out for the occasion. Friends, colleagues, clients, collaborators… and many other people who had heard about the show.

It was especially nice to have my mother with me for the occasion, who had just flown in all the way from Germany.

If you'd like to see more photos, I'll be slowly adding some to this Facebook Album.

The show is still up till November 29th, open on weekdays, 9-5.30pm, 871 United Nations Plaza.

Thanks again to everybody who came out, and especially to Dr. Jakob von Wagner and Dr René Rubbeling.
With Whitney Sherman, Professor at MICA, and her husband (left) and my mother.

Original art from PEANUT in The Steps Shown gallery at "3rd In The Burg"

I am showing original art from my graphic novel PEANUT at The Steps Shown stairwell gallery in Harrisburg, PA, this weekend! Jonathan Bean is not only a friend, but a supremely talented children's book illustrator and author, and I'm honored to be shown at his event.

From Jonathan Bean's Blog:
I am thrilled to be showing the work of the very talented Paul Hoppe for this month's 3rd in the Burg. All around illustration juggernaut, Paul does it all: picture books, children's magazines, zines, graphic novels and editorial! The Steps Shown stairwell gallery will feature Paul's drawings from Peanut, the recently released, and deservedly praised, YA graphic novel by Ayun Halliday. Paul is busily at work in NYC and won't be present, but you can visit him online and tell him how much you like his work at www.paulhoppe.de
This month's open studio: Friday, July 19, 6-9pm.
1320 North 3rd Street, 3rd Floor
Harrisburg, PA 17102
Hope you can make it. A visit includes a refreshing drink, an activity for children and air conditioning!

Reading at Brooklyn Children's Museum

Here are some photos of my recent event at the Brooklyn Children's Museum. I contributed to Muriel Feldshuh's Illustrator Quilts, which are exhibited at the museum this month, so I was invited to do a reading.

Afterwards I drew with the kids (and some adults), which was great fun! Thanks so much to Muriel Feldshuh for including me in her quilt, and to Aiesha Turman for organizing this and inviting me!

DRAWN in the NY Daily News

Now that the great DRAWN IN BROOKLYN Show is coming down, I wanted to share this great article that came out end of last year in the New York Daily News. The show is being de-installed this week, but perhaps you can still get a peek at some of the work if you missed it… I feel so fortunate to have been included in it, and so grateful for meeting all these great artists! Everybody in the children's book field has been so warm and welcoming, it's a true pleasure. (Click to enlarge)

I'm very honored to be part of this upcoming show:

Ink Plots: The Tradition of the Graphic Novel at School of Visual Arts is an exhibition of original drawings, books, prints and animations by over 100 artists. Ink Plots traces the development of sequential art over four decades with selections from SVA faculty members and showcases the work of SVA alumni who are pushing the boundaries of the graphic novel today.

I was informed by SILA, the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, that I won the Joseph Morgan Henninger Award – Best of Show, their highest award. Wow! Can't believe it.

I wish I could have been there at the exhibition opening, and the awards ceremony. But it was great to see the photos on the Gallery Nucleus website.

GOLD from the LA Society of Illustrators!

I was shocked when I was notified that my Destinations piece was awarded the Gold Medal in the annual SILA (Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles) competition.

I originally did this piece for a calendar published by the Finest | Magma Brand Communication Group.

This particular illustration has been extremely popular, it was published by American Illustration, Communication Arts, 3x3 and will be in the upcoming Advertising and Institutional show of the Society of Illustrators / NY. And I had already known that it was also accepted into the annual SILA show, which I was very happy about since I had never entered this competition. But to hear that I won the Gold Award in the Advertising cathegory was as unexpected as it was thrilling. Thanks SILA!

There will be an opening reception on March 28 at 7:00 pm at the Gallery Nucleus with the Awards Ceremony at 8:00 pm, unfortunately I won't be able to attend. The exhibit will end on April 3, 2009.

Metal Man was judged a winner in Bookbuilders of Boston's 52nd Annual New England Book Show competition, yay!

Also, one of my illustrations (the infamous balloon drawing) has been accepted into the 47th Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles Annual Illustration West show, and will be exhibited at the Gallery Nucleus in March.
