Metal Man Review

Here is a very nice review in the Bureau County Republican:

"Metal Man" is not just any welder. He's a metal sculptor, creating art from junk. Devon loves to watch him work, although Metal Man won't let him come too close. "That torch'll tear you up like a thousand killer bees," he warns. Then, one sizzling summer day, he says something different: "Whaddya wanna make?" Devon reaches deep inside and draws out the image in his head for Metal Man. "I want to live in a star," he says, and from Devon's imaginative description a beautifully crafted Star-House grows under the sculptor's skillful fingers. Beautifully crafted, too, is the text of this rare picture book: each perfect word in the perfect order. Masterful mixed-media illustrations show color and action but also suggest heat, light, and even the texture of metal, fabric, and concrete. Together text and art add up to a picture book that's a pleasure to look at, a joy to read.

This is for the Swiss Magazine Die Weltwoche. The writer tries to deconstruct sentiments towards the credit crunch and explains why in his opinion there is no such thing. Many thanks to Picture Editor Catharina Hanreich!

3x3 Illustration Competition

I forgot to mention, my Winter piece received another fun recognition, it was selected into the 3x3 Illustration Annual! Thanks to publisher Charles Hively and all the judges, very much looking forward to seeing the book.

The Improper Bostonian

Here is a series of illustrations about the Canopy Tour at the Mount Washington Resort / White Mountains. It seems like quite an experience, zipping at great height between very tall trees, enjoying the beautiful view– and the adrenaline rush. Thanks to Katie Noble and George Restrepo at the Improper!

A great time at MoCCA

Another MoCCA Arts Festival is over, it was a lot of fun. HAT was very well received, as was the brand-new Rabid Rabbit, as was the brand-new Syncopated Comics, as were all the great books by my fellow comic artist friends.

Thanks also to Marion Vitus for snapping this little picture of me and my Rabid Rabbit friends Ben X. Trinh, Chris Butzer and Sungyoon Choi.

HAT at the MoCCA NY Arts Festival

If you're in the city, the MoCCA Arts Festival is this weekend! I'll have my brand-new picture book HAT with me. You can find me at the Rabid Rabbit table 310. It's always a great event with lots of things to see and people to meet.

Also, in the days just before the festival, there are two release parties for wonderful comic anthologies that I'm part of:

Rabid Rabbit#10
, this Thursday June 4th at the Beauty Bar, Manhattan
Syncopated #4 on Friday, June 5th at Rocketship, Brooklyn.

Hope to see you there!
