Tales from Ovid, for The Phoenix

This is for the anouncement / review of a play in the Phoenix (formerly the Boston Phoenix). In this staging of Tales from Ovid, some scenes have the players perform hanging on fabric that is suspended from the ceiling.

It was interesting to read up on the background, on Ovid and his writings, and Greek Mythology. The inspiration for this image is the story of Phaethon, son of Helios, who was allowed to steer the sun-wagon, lost control and almost set the whole earth on fire. I enjoyed working with energetic brush strokes to emphasize raw energy in the piece.
Many thanks to AD Kevin Banks.

Carbon Emissions

You can see my latest illustration for the Boston Phoenix here. Originally, the subject was Carbon Allowances and the ways they are being purchased, traded, or even given away for free. Carbon Allowances give companies the right to pollute (to a certain extent).

In this week's paper, my illustration has been used in a more broad environmental context.

A poor environmental record

I did some illustrations for a feature in the current Boston Phoenix, that criticizes G. W. Bush's environmental record and hopes for a big improvement under Barack Obama.
Here you can see my images in their context about National Parks, air pollution near schools, Superweeds, and transmission lines.

Art Section Cover for Boston Phoenix

This is an illustration about the upcoming HBO series "Generation Kill", based on the book by Evan Wright, who was embedded in a the US Army during the invasion of Iraq. Initially, his story was writen as a reportage for the Rolling Stone, later he expanded it into a book. The illustration is featured as cover image for the arts section of the current issue (though it doesn't appear online).

You can read the entire feature here. Also, here you can see a crop of my original drawing. Thanks to ADs Kevin Banks and Kristen Goodfriend!

Dunkin' Rage

This is an illustration for the BOSTON PHOENIX. It's for their new series “Sightings”, where a writer takes a true, observed incident and riffs on it, creating a fictional background story around it. You can check out the elaborate backstory behind this image here.
