Teaching at School of VISUAL ARTS

I'm honored to be joining SVA faculty this summer to teach the Visual Narrative Class at their first ever Illustration Residency Program. The other teachers will be Viktor Koen, who is the main organizer of the program, and Greg Crane for Painting and Drawing.

I'm working hard on the curriculum and very much looking forward to working with a diverse group of artists. The program is five weeks, starting June 2nd, and will have an exhibition at its end, together with the other Residency Programs. Stay tuned for more news... Many thanks to Viktor Koen!

Handmade Printing

Ah, the joys of handmade self-publishing! I'm currently reprinting some comics such as Casual Comics 1 and A walk through Red Hook as well as printing the first edition of the brand-new Casual Comics 2.

It's a lot of work to produce books by hand but there's certain things that you can do, which you'll never get out of regular offset printing. You get to choose funky papers and have control over every aspect of the product. Also, you can do stencils, stamps and other fun things.

Here's my latest illo for the series "Sightings" in Boston's largest weekly, for a text by Ian Sands.

Metal Man book launch at MoCCA

As an early launch event, I'll be signing my brand-new children's book Metal Man (written by Aaron Reynolds) at the Rabid Rabbit table during the MoCCA Art Festival 2008, June 7th-8th, 2008 at the Puck Building, NYC. Hope to see you there - I'll make you a drawing in each book!

I'm currently working on the final art for my second picture book, HAT, which is also my first self-authored children's book. I'm trying some new things visually, notably a real watercolor layer that I do with colored inks on Arches Coldpressed. The book is about a little boy called Henry, who finds a hat and imagines what it can do for him. It will be published by Bloomsbury USA in Winter 08/09, and by Berlin Verlag in Germany sometime later.

ID Magazine Illustrations

The following illustrations just came out in ID Magazine's Annual Business Issue (on funky pink uncoated paper!). These are for an article about some businesspeople who suggest instead of hiring designers, they should rather become designers. You can read the full article here. Thanks again to Art Director Thomas Porostocky!
