SVA Illustration Summer Residency 2014

The SVA Illustration Summer Residencies are in full swing, and the first group of students is already done! The second group is starting now through August. It's a very international group from all corners of the earth, and it's always a huge pleasure to work with them.

Congrats to the June 2014 students!
The Illustration Residency is a one-month bootcamp in which students have illustration and visual storytelling classes, go to exhibitions, events and artists' studios, experience the cultural richness of New York City, and have a (hopefully) amazing time together.

The principal instructors are Viktor Koen, Anna Raff, Lisel Ashlock and me, plus guest lectures by the likes of Paul Buckley, Aaron Meshon and Marshall Arisman, for example.

In my Visual Storytelling class, the students create work on the spot

5th SVA Summer Illustration Residency

Here are my students and a brief look at some of the work they did in my class. For the fifth year, I'm part of the faculty of the Summer Illustration Residency at the School of Visual Arts. I'm teaching the Visual Narrative class.

The attendees are literarily from all over the world and it's a privilege to work with them. Classes are going on through the end of June, when the it all will culminate in a Open House/ Exhibition event where everybody can see the work they've been doing during their time in NY. Thanks, as always, to Viktor Koen for making me part of this special program.

Summer Classes and Lectures

I wanted to thank everybody in the Summer Illustration Residency at SVA and at the 3x3 Nuts and Bolts Conference for their interest and participation. It was great fun and honor to be part of these two events. I also wanted to thank Charles Hively and 3x3 for inviting me to be part of the 3x3 Conference, and Viktor Koen for having me on board for the SVA program. Hope everybody enjoyed it as much as I.

SVA Illustration Residency

For the third year, I'm teaching the Sequential Class in the SVA Illustration Summer Residency. Other teachers include Viktor Koen and Greg Crane. In my class I try to cover visual storytelling not only in comics and sequential art, but also include children's books and visual journalism. Besides my class, the program includes illustration projects, drawing, painting, studio visits and guest lecturers. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and countries. If you know of somebody who could be interested in this, here's the link!

Summer Residency in Illustration

I'm teaching Visual Narrative / Graphic Storytelling in this great summer program at SVA again. Last year it was a lot of fun! We'll be working on short picture stories and comics, and exploring the possibilities of visual storytelling in general. So don't hesitate and sign up! Contact info below.

Summer Residency in Illustration
ILD-4993-A
Illustration and Visual Narrative
June 1 – July 2

This studio residency offers artists the opportunity to explore the wealth of resources available to professional illustrators in New York City while developing a portfolio of work that embodies personal vision.

With guidance from successful, award-winning illustrators, participants will complete a body of work comprised of images created from assigned projects, as well as those self-directed by the artist, with the aim of showcasing personal style and aesthetic direction. The goals are to advance to the next level of artistic practice and to attain an enhanced position in the illustration marketplace.

Faculty critiques—individual and group—and visits to professional studios will complement independent work; together these initiatives form an intense program that fosters professional growth and an expansion of personal voice.

Special lectures by guest artists, gallery directors, publishers and art directors are designed to provide additional insight regarding the realities of a career in illustration. Participants have access to a digital facility, as well as the opportunity to work in a variety of mediums. The program culminates in an exhibition.

Faculty and lecturers have included Marshall Arisman, Paul Buckley, Gregory Crane, Paul Hoppe, Viktor Koen and Cheryl Phelps.
Note: A portfolio is required for review and acceptance to this program. For further information please contact Keren Moscovitch, coordinator, Summer Residency Programs, Division of Continuing Education, at 212.592.2188; fax: 212.592.2060; e-mail: kmoscovitch@sva.edu.

Typography 1 class

On a very short and spontaneous note, I have just started to teach a Typography 1 course in the Advertising Design & Graphic Arts program of the New York City College of Technology. I look forward to fun and games with Serifs, Sans-serifs, and ... Egyptians!
